Hugo Chavez’s regime was popular in Venezuela despite the country's dire economic conditions due to the subsidized services funded by the massive oil income. Among these subsidized services was food, and imported chicken was one of the main products sold by the government. Soon, cheap food became a robust control system that bankrupted private producers due to asymmetric competition. This is what is known in the US as dumping. When oil prices dropped, and the government could not afford to import food, scarcity became normal in Venezuela. In Fisting, I seek to symbolically subvert the domination system that was implemented through chicken in my country.
