Hosts is a 3-channel video that portrays Venezuelan immigrants making a dish that is considered a symbol of Venezuelan identity: the arepa. I filmed them in their own kitchens after an open call for volunteers to participate in the project. With Hosts, I sought to create empathy towards Venezuelan immigrants, while expressing a sense of community among the community’s members. To foster a sense of spirituality, I presented the subjects in a mystical semblance by using high-contrast lighting and slow motion, which suggest a spiritual atmosphere in the image. The private space and the ritual act attempt to enhance the sense of intimacy in the videos.
