Vanitas Vanitatum

Performance

2016

Vanitas is a subgenre of still life with Christian background that reflects on how eveything in life is vain due the inevitability of our own death. Some of the symbols used in vanitas are the flowers (ephemeral beauty) and elements of human trades, knowledge, power and glory. Here, I use flowers and woodshopping materials and tools to create a performance version of Vanitas. I use my shoelaces to tie the flowers to my skin. One by one, I dissect the flowers, nail them to the lumber, and perform other actions. By contrasting my lacerated flesh and the flowers. I explore the dialogue between life and death as a continued concept, instead of opposed ones.
